Alcohol Abuse & Dependence

In Australia, a lot of people drink alcohol on a daily basis. Alcohol abuse, however, has a significant negative impact on both the community and individual health in Australia because it has a high propensity for misuse and addiction.

TCM has a wealth of clinical experience using its techniques to treat alcoholism. TCM emphasizes that alcohol's nature is extreme heat and toxicity, and that binge drinking frequently can damage the spleen and stomach while also disrupting the flow of energy, resulting in a lack of energy in those organs. Alcoholism is typically characterized by symptoms of heat and cold that suggest damp patterns. In order to eliminate the heat and encourage dieresis to eliminate the dampness, TCM treatment could resolve the dampness and restore Yin and Yang's harmonious relationship.

Numerous decoctions, including decoction for warming the gallbladder, herbal decoction for alcohol detoxication, and TCM decoction for alcohol dependence, are effective in treating alcohol dependence patients by changing the actions of neurotransmitters and elevating excitatory amino acids in the cortex. These decoctions were either passed down from ancient wisdom or developed by modern Chinese physicians.

Acupuncture treatments for alcoholism can be divided into two categories: ear stimulation treatments and body treatments. As acupuncture can help maintain or restore homeostasis and the biochemical balance of the central nervous system, it is effective in reducing the length of time people experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking. The effectiveness of ear stimulation in lowering anxiety levels in female alcoholics during the withdrawal period has also been confirmed by a randomized, single-blinded control study.
